Revver have included a new feature in their latest rollout, which is the ability to subscribe to a feed. If you wanted to be regularly updated on my most popular videos on Revver for example, you would just need to click on the feed button which is a little orange button with white dot and two white waves emitting from it. In the widget above my header is the symbol. It only works for me in my Internet Explorer feedreader. To learn more about feeds go to this post.
I have several feedreaders and it has revolutionised my Internet experience allowing me to keep up to date with all the blogs and videomakers I am interested in. I regularly update them and unsubscribe from blogs that I have lost interest in and found new ones etc. It doesn't take to long to scan a feed to see if there's something of interest to you.

A year with Revver
Today when I logged in to check my stats on Revver, I was delighted to find the new accounting stats are working well. I can clearly see now, which of my videos are being watched and how many clicks they are receiving. I haven't been uploading many clips on Revver for a while. I have been busy elsewhere in my life. My results have reflected this lack of activity. I have uploaded a few in the past few days to get to a rounded off number of 410. I think I may delete 10 at some stage later.
I uploaded my first Revver video on 31/3/06. A year ago tomorrow. There have been a lot of changes since that time. I have $894.80 total earnings to date, yet I think I earnt a hundred or so before the site changed and the stats were restarted. I am delighted with this result. My clips are not very popular and they haven't been edited, as I have said before. I began as an experiment to familiarise myself with the technology. The ease with which the results came in the beginning has stunted my growth. I haven't continued to do what I intended in the beginning, which was to create short edited clips to share places and stories with the world.
The Revver staff have been helpful and have made so many improvements to the site that I couldn't begin to mention them all. There have been times when things have changed more than I wanted them to, yet in reflecting on the year that's been, the majority of changes have been improvements. I really like Revver and those involved with it. I appreciate the helpfulness of the staff and their patience with complaints and requests. I appreciate that they have allowed people from all over the world to participate, even though it means extra paperwork for them.
I intend this next year to go back to my original goal. It will mean that I don't upload as many clips. I have uploaded 410 clips this first year. I don't expect there will be anywhere near as many in the next year, but who knows.

Free Hugs
Today I have read about the disgraceful threats made to Kathy Sierra: Creating Passionate Users, who is one of my favourite bloggers. I am not linking to the post because I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It is quite horrible and saddening. It would be great if by bringing this to light, as Kathy has done, that we can somehow change the way people behave, or take more responsibility about what we tolerate. I guess I see bullying every day in the school yard, but adults are extreme and horrific in comparison.
I hope that I see more inspiration, hope and joy online rather than the shadowy dark side of human nature. It worries me because I guess up to this point I have been thinking that on the Internet, you can hit delete, or close a window if you come across you don't tolerate.

Weekend Viewing
I watched 'The Jacket'today. Adrien Brody is lovely. It was tense in the beginning, but got lovelier.
On Friday night I watched 'A Good Woman' and found it delightful. Oscar Wilde is a great writer.
I haven't watched many films lately or have began watching only to be dissappointed.

Nadia Tass News
One of my favourite filmmakers Nadia Tass is mentioned in IF News today as being chosen for Aurora. I'm pleased. I love many of her films, especially Amy, Malcolm and Rikki and Pete. Love them!
Something to look forward to.
"Nadia Tass, who has made many iconic Australian films including Amy, Malcolm, Mr Reliable and The Big Steal as well as several US productions including Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story, is to direct Six Weeks of Heaven. Writer is Chris Philips and Producer is Dennis Kiely. The film tells of a nine year old girl who seeks to fulfil the dying wish of her brother for one last summer holiday."
Something to look forward to.

Blog Hunt
Blogs I am adding to my feed to watch for a month or so are:
Media Researcher
I like the way he lists his blogroll as influencers. He doesn't post very frequently though, so I may lose interest, we'll see!
Melbourne Film Blog
Melbourne Photo Blog
Love the photos of Melbourne, reviews of films are interesting.
Random Brainwave
Not sure really other than its kind of raw and interesting.

Mashable : Poll
Mashable have an interesting post on which sites pay the best. I have to say that from trying Metacafe, Revver and Blip TV, Revver has paid me over $800US. My clips aren't popular. I haven't received a cent from Metacafe and have only earnt .90c from Blip TV and obviously haven't received that.
In fairness to the above sites, I have only uploaded 5 videos to Metacafe and currently have only 3 on the site that are crawling along. I doubt that I will make it to their minimum views though, so am not bothering with it. I have 13 clips on Blip and haven't really put much time into it. I am intending to though, so I guess it will be fairer to assess Blip, when or if I put more effort into it.
I have put over 400 clips on Revver but very few of them have received more than 100 views. I have also been using Revver since March last year, but only tried Metacafe and Blip later in the year.
What the poll says about it being difficult to assess apples for apples as we used to say about quotes for curtains, is true. I guess it depends very much on individual needs. Their assessment is possibly only useful for a clip that is likely to get 10 000 views. Oh I wish!

Teenagers on Film
Watching "Little Miss Sunshine" tonight, the teenage son enters, Andy says "Why are there no pleasant teenagers in films?"
Fair comment. They are not represented well in the media. Teenagers that is. It is not accurate. Teenagers are great and I am obviously not one of them when I say that. Why is this? The stereotype of teenagers is not fair.

Overheard Conversation at School
Teacher: I saw this great poetry reading on Youtube last night and wish I could show you but Youtube is banned.
Student: Why don't you download it?
Teacher: You can't download from Youtube.
Student: Yes, you can, I'll show you.
Students walks over to teachers laptop, types in Keepvid then types in a file conversion site to convert from flv to playable files.
Teacher: Wow!
Student: So tomorrow you can show us the poem.
Teacher: Is it hard to come to school, drag yourself away from the Internet, when you are possibly learning less here.
Many Students Loudly: YES!

Clever
Imagine if creators could come from anywhere and be anyone and were invited directly to create and were selected by popularity on merit.
Imagine that!
The National Sunflower Association, and when I say National, I think it's American National we're talking about, is having a competition for video makers. The prize is $10 000 for the winning video.

Tropfest - My Favourites
My favourite Tropfest film was "Between the Flags". I loved the humour of it and the underlying messages. It embraced Australian culture in good ways. The other film that made an impression was "Road Rage". It was too sad and then too funny. The one that haunted me was "Bad Yoghurt". It was gross, but the image remains.
Tropfest was good this year, even though I only saw it on a TV screen. "An Imaginary Life" was ok, but I wouldn't have given it the winner.

Best Part
I confess, I don't watch awards. I imagine this was the best part for anyone else who is like me. I am confident others will correct me if I am wrong.
It's like sport, I want to play it or leave it. I don't really want to watch, unless someone I dearly love is playing.
I'm not really interested in what other people award or think is great. I want to watch things for myself. I do seriously like this though.

Comment Moderation
Comments are welcome on this blog. Unpaid advertising is not. I seem to have been getting a few comments lately that are so obviously link bait that even I, with my very unsavvy skills can recognise them. Such as the first comment on my previous post. Until this point, I haven't ever rejected a comment. From here on, I will be. I didn't even read that comment and I wish I had, because I would have deleted it too.
So cheapskate advertisers of things that serve no real purpose - Don't come here and comment, cause you'll be rejected.
Warning enough?

Good Magazine 2
This latest clip from Good Magazine is well put together. I really like the soundtrack also. It offers only information, no solutions.
What would you do about it indeed?
Good Magazine is a great source for news stories that are positive and uplifting usually. This one doesn't fall into that category, yet I imagine has a pure purpose and motivation.

Revver and Magnify Article - A must read
The Revver blog today has this article : Access the Frozen Knowledge of Video
posted by Micki, that refers to Magnify's Steve Rosenbaum's recent writing. I love it because I feel that Revver and Magnify are indeed doing that. I love Rosenbaum's phrase 'video is simply frozen knowledge'. It captures what it means to me.
I uploaded my 400th video on Revver tonight. My earnings have slowed right down. I began to wonder last week, why I still bothered with it. I guess it is about the freezing of my knowledge and what I see in the world. I like that I can write a blog and take a video and put it online. I like that I can refer others if they are interested to have a look. I do it for me and I know that many others are doing for themselves and it will create a mass of information that could be useful.
When I read this article it felt truthful.

How 'Australia's Got Talent' treats Jack Dan
Jack Dan Blake was no doubt pleased when he got to be on new TV show 'Australia's Got Talent'. He was featured in the promotions for the up and coming show as seen on this YouTube clip.
In front of a live studio audience his performance seemed to go well. This is a clip of how it seemed that night.
This is what was shown on TV on Sunday night. Editing changes everything. So what do you think of that?

Jaman - Future for Indie Films?
Jaman is according to its site
There are some good offerings on the site. Different countries have licencing restrictions and there are free downloads and rentals as well as fees associated with some of these services. It is in beta. There are currently 2 Australian films, Siam Sunset and 15 Amore. I have seen Siam Sunset and enjoyed it. It is a black comedy with fantasy and escapism. Some great scenery. I loved what it said about colour.

cinema. For filmmakers, jaman is a global and secure way of distributing

I have yet to see 15 Amore, but can't access it via this site. It looks great. There is a preview that can be viewed.
There are forums and groups where users can discuss the films they view. I think this is an amazing resource for film lovers. I live in regional Australia and it is very rare for independant film to make it's way to our local cinema. The video stores don't always stock them either. Websites like this will allow all to enjoy the choice.

New Magnify Channels - February 2007
Magnify are exploding with channels now. Each time I check in, there are new ones. Here are new channels worth checking out:
Movies
Public Domain Movies - Only 22 movies today, but potentially an interesting site, particularly for those who like old movies.
Some of them run for over an hour and I haven't watched them right through yet. Interesting concept though.
The TV Trail
Runs with a similar concept but I have a feeling these shows are not public domain. The Simpsons, Six Million Dollar Man and Twilight Zone are some of the shows featured on the home page of the channel.
I notice that many have created channels that so far contain nothing. I guess, Magnify is getting a lot of media right now and people are just staking claims, so to speak, creating their own spaces within this space with hopes for the future.
It is a space to watch.
The falling brick channel received over 500 views today. That's great! There is an interesting clip that was submitted today about the classic Australian delicacy of Tim Tams. Called 'Slam', it is interesting and whilst it runs a little long, is worth a watch.

Coming Soon to Movies: Starter for 10
Starter for 10, which has not yet been released has a sountrack featuring Kate Bush. It was produced by Tom Hanks. It sounds great. Set in England and meant for people who grew up in the 80s. Me!

Good News for Magnify.net
I am pleased to read "Magnify.net raises $1.2 Million". I have found the people at Magnify to be really helpful and I love what they are doing. It is great to be able to create your own channel and they just keep adding features. It is fun to use and the team are supportive and helpful if you have any issues. What more can users ask for?

Three Dollars
I watched 'Three Dollars' for the second time this week. I love this film. The central character, Eddie, is such a compassionate person and his suffering hurts. I cried during the railway station scene, knowing this is how we behave in public as humans, inhumanely. I love the way Eddie treats others.
Another great Australian film that many have never heard of!

My Favourite Magnify Channels
I have some of my own, but there are some great channels.
Here is a selection from Magnify:
All about Tesla
Amnesty International
world history
Organic gardening
Backpackers Stories
Magnify is really taking off. The number of channels grows daily. There is good traffic on these sites. I am pleased because all my interactions with the Magnify team have been pleasant and I am confident they are going to be a great success.

Revenue Sharing coming soon to YouTube
I have never uploaded a clip to YouTube. I have committed to Revver to house my collections and I am more than happy with this arrangement.
This latest news that I have read on Nalt's blog is interesting though. I wonder how this will change the online video world?
I have used YouTube to find videos to use on my blogs on occasion and imagine this could improve the quality of the video's.
I wonder if they will be able to continue to allow people without the rights to continue that if they are revenue sharing?
In the BBC version of this news:
Interesting....

Legacy of Blogging and Online Video
One of the reasons I blog and make my little clips for revver is to keep a journal for my family. I have a great, great grandmother who wrote a couple of small novels and pamphlet’s that are housed in the State Library of Victoria and I loved discovering this. I have diaries that were my grandmothers and I treasure her handwriting and her little observations of life. I hope to have grandchildren and I imagine they could be as interested as I am.
Some of the videos I have made are of places that will change in the future. Climate will change the landscape. Increasing populations will develop places and they won’t be recognisable. It is a historic legacy as well to see little glimpses of places.
I know my clips aren’t highly entertaining right now and it could seem like a waste of time, yet I imagine some of them could have value for others at some time. I video things that take my attention for now and I don’t edit or think too much about them. I expect I will improve over time, I will get better equipment and become better at capturing things. I learn more about the technology and I enjoy learning this.
The learning about the technology and tools of the Internet is another motivating force for me. I find I can’t spend the time to learn something if it has no purpose for me and I read this post from Beet.tv with interest this morning. It is true. All the videos that are being archived on the Internet will make a rich resource for future generations.

The future of Video shops
I guess they are more DVD shops now, but anyway, last night I went to my local video shop to hire some DVD's and it was really challenging to find something I hadn't seen or wanted to watch. I looked around and noticed that the library had shrunk. There was a pile of used DVDs at the front of the shop. It felt like an unannounced closing down sale and I felt pretty sad.
I know this has been predicted and discussed by many and I remember when I was in a shop nearly 20 years ago, saying to my business partner, we have to get out of this shop. Shops are going to be gone. I was way ahead of myself at the time. We sold that business and I was really happy with the profit we made, and to be free of having to go to the shop everyday. However, that aside, the business is still successfully running, exactly where it was when I left it.
I think though that music and video shops might be in trouble though. It certainly looks like it. I guess the only thing keeping them going are all those people who don't really understand or want to know about computers.

Latest Revver News
I was delighted to read in the Revver forum today that they are looking at the accounts. I have felt that my stats aren't being properly recorded and I was astonished when I returned from holidays and found that although I had received over a hundred views a day on Magnify on just one of my channels, which is almost exclusively revver videos, my balance had not shifted! I was paid over $200 in the last payment for a months earnings. My next payment will be only $50ish and the way this month is shaping up, there would have to be something massive occur for me to make it to $20. I know I had 3 weeks of not uploading. I was under the impression that whenever clips were viewed they would have ads on them, no matter how old they were. I wonder if this is not so. Perhaps I need to ask that on the forum. I won't bother them though until I hear the outcome of their current investigations.
I love Revver and think it is such a great idea and such a great service for video producers that I hate to complain to them. In the past I have found them to be fair and transparent in their communications with me, so I just trust that order will be restored. I guess also if they were experiencing a difficulty, I wouldn't want to add pressure.
I have finally got a widget of clips on this blog, but I would prefer it not to be above the header of my blog. It's the best I can do right now. The one on this blog is of my clips that have received over a hundred views. I have also added a widget to Joh Blogs of the clips from our holiday if you are interested. I have also written on that blog about the films I have seen lately.

Whilst I've been away on Holidays......
Magnify has announced it's launch of .09. I love this site. If you make videos and want to create a channel I would recommend Magnify. If you like watching videos and want to create a channel to share your video's, again Magnify. The possibilities are endless. It is a really useful site. I look forward to seeing the changes that are coming. They have over 1800 channels now.
They are supportive and encouraging. It is getting quite good traffic also for some of my videos. My videos are not really viral, but more sharing sights I've seen on my little trips, so the traffic I get would be small compared to those who are intentionally going for the audiences. You can create a channel based on any topic that interests you. I encourage you to check it out.
You can share the revenue they earn through revver accounts and google adsense, which makes life simple.
Revver has been very quiet for me whilst I was away. In saying that I have not earnt a cent until I put a couple of new clips up when I returned. I have received over a hundred views per day on one of my magnify channels but this hasn't translated into any revenue from Revver, so I am surprised by that.
Both Magnify and Revver have forums and I have noticed in the forums that others have also seen a slowdown in their revenue from Revver, so I guess the Christmas/New Year period has been a quiet one. Those forums are a great way to stay in touch and lesson the panic when things don't seem to be right. It always seems better when others are experiencing the same thing, don't you think?

Goanna at Cape Conron
This big reptile joined us for our picnic lunch at Cape Conran during the holidays. After Mr Magnificent attempted a conversation with it, it scampered off, slowly.

Imperfections = magic
Sometimes the magic is in the imperfections writes Kathy Sierra. Creating Passionate Users is one of my favourite blogs. I especially love the graphs and this post is no exception.
Those flaws that come from having a low budget, or not enough time, tend to keep things real. It keeps us conscious of the human behind the creation and that's a good thing. Check it out.

Magnify.net
I have just noticed that my channel on Magnify also called Falling Brick is featured on their page at present. This has led to a wonderful surge in stats that I am really pleased about.
I spent some time last night tweaking my sites and have found there have been a lot of improvements to the Magnify site since I last spent a lot of time there. There are so many more ways that you can tailor your channel to serve your purposes. I love it.
There are now over 1500 channels to watch. Most of them allow participants to submit videos also, so it is a great way to get some more exposure for your clips.
If you want to create your own channel it is really quite easy and they are very supportive. You can put videos from a number of places on there such as Revver,Yahoo,Blip TV, Youtube,or Google. Other video site users such as Videoegg have also submitted clips to my sites, so I imagine that almost any could be included. Even if you don't make channels it can be a great way to share with your friends what video's you like.
Blogger can put a widget on their site that will feature a selection of the videos you have on your channel.
If you want to make money, they share the proceeds from the Google Ads and the Revver videos with you via your existing Google or Revver accounts. I don't have a Google account, but I can benefit from the affiliate income from Revver.

Outdoor Cinema
In Melbourne there is an outdoor cinema. The current program looks really good. Many of my favourite films are listed as showing.
What could be better than to be outside watching a film on a warm summer night?
There was an article in the Age about it on the weekend that I posted to my newsvine. There is one in Sydney as well.

Peter Gabriel on TED Talks
The following clip is a must view. Peter Gabriel, who is after all a wonderful musician, is also a human rights activist. In this clip he explains about the Witness organisation. Their motto is: See It, Film It, Change it. What a great way to use your camera.

Revver 1.1
It's good. The guys at Revver keep getting better. I can't say enough to praise their efforts. Check out these little clips to learn more;
But Wait, there is more.......
How entertaining was that!
Well maybe there is a little bit of advertising/promotion in there, but fair dinkum, if you want to make and share video's, Revver is your guy!

Forgotten Animals
Nalts latest post on 'Will Video for Food'
is not the self promotion he has been up to lately. Not that I think there's a problem with self promoting. If you can't promote yourself on the Internet, you're likely to be talking to yourself mostly. Anyway, he's highlighting a cause that I feel is very worthwhile. Take a look at this video:
In my experience dogs are generous and loving beings and I applaud video's being made to promote this work and any other problems we have in our world that a bit of attention, awareness and cash could address.

300 Clips on Revver
I have just uploaded my 300th clip on Revver. It is a video I took of Ella, our wonderful whippet who died earlier this year. I still miss her. The great thing about this clip for me personally is the memory of her and one of the funny little things she used to do. She would walk into the water and just stand there. We would laugh. She had an amazing personality and would do random and spontaneous things that always allowed us to know she had preferences and made her own choices about her behaviour.
Most of my clips on revver are just little glimpses of things I liked to look at as I move through my life. They are not rehearsed or staged, but just random little shots of the everyday that I find enchanting. I take them for myself. I am happy that others enjoy them too. I have made over $800 US dollars on Revver. I opened my account in March this year after reading about Revver on Robin Goods site as I have previously mentioned. It has been a fun little interest and I feel satisfied with this collection I have shared.
I aspire to creating stories and making real videos. I am a full time school teacher and I don't have time to play as much as I would like. I love teaching too. I intend to make videos to entertain and to educate or ideally inspire, but it will have to wait. For now I am just learning about all the little bits I need to do that. I am enjoying the journey though.

Robin Good
I would like to acknowledge that Robin Good's blog Master New Media was the place where I first heard about Revver. I read an article there about it and thought I would give it a try.
I have just read an article there:
Internet Video - How To Monetize Your Independent Video Content
His site is worth reading at least once a week if you want to participate in any form of Internet publishing. I like his design as well, making it easy to read and interesting to look at.
Thanks Robin Good, you are good.

Revver, Fame and I!!
When I read this post this morning, "Fame TV live this week" on the Revver Blog, I had no clue it would apply to any of the little clips I've submitted! But alas, this afternoon I have received an email to say that possibly, On The Beach
and learner driver No.6
So I am pretty stoked about that! Fame TV hey! Well it all remains to be seen.

Metacafe - Looks different
I dropped in on the Metacafe site over the weekend to check out how my little clip has been going for the past 12 months. I submitted another one that got an inactive status and a negative comment fairly instantaneously. No real problems there I guess, they aren't highly entertaining, just interesting.
I have noticed that Metacafe have improved their site though. It is easier to use and I can understand it more now. I might put some time into it soon. It has my attention.
With the review system, I imagine it will be tougher than revver, but I am up for a little challenge.

Blip TV
I have posted a couple of video's on Blip TV to see if it is all that others say about it. I still love Revver though and my stats are improving again, yet still not back up to that large hill that was pre the new revver site. That's ok though, others have mentioned they suffered a loss with the change, so it seems like the price we pay to have all the new functions.
Anyway here is a clip that is ONLY on Blip TV. Revver rejected it. It was an amazing trip along that road as I recall.

In the NSW Outback the road to Menindee from Lake Mungo is dry and dusty. The red dust gets in everywhere. It was 50 degrees this final day of 2005 as we headed toward Menindee. Even the kangaroos where looking for shade!

Revver API News
And from the Revver blog post:
"I wanted to take a moment to provide an actual “real life example” of what you can do with the API. In this example I’ll be using the new Revver Whitelabel PHP SDK 1.0.1."
I want to learn more...

This video takes a while to load to watch, but it is worth it. It goes for 4minutes and 18 seconds and you may want to download it to enjoy it properly. From the Revver Site:
This short screened at SUNDANCE as part of KEVIN SPACEY's Triggerstreet TOP 10. A short film about any given moment and the many things that may be happening in it.
enjoy!

Confession
I am amazed that I have made hundreds of dollars on Revver, not thousands as others have but hundreds and I have really only put on mostly short video shots that are in no way professional or edited even. I think I did play with two but play is definately the word. I want to move on to producing better videos, but find it hard when what I am doing seems to be returning something and I have very limited time available to me to play around with this stuff.
I read today on Nalt's site "Will Video for Food" about George Lucas changing directionl I have added the feed from his blog to this blog because if you are interested in online videos or viral videos, I think his blog is probably a simple and informative place to start. He has heaps of great information on there if you are interested in getting online with your videos in any capacity.

Revver Recovery
I don't know about other revver users but I have found my stats are recovering nicely from the drop they received when the new revver 1.0 started. I had began to think that it would no longer be worth the effort, minimal that it is, and have been pleased to see that my patience has paid off.
I have been away on holidays for a week and continued to receive a modest trickle whilst not uploading any more clips.
There are so many video sites online now. I still think revver is the best and I like the simple and reliable way they communicate and improve the site.
Good for them. Good for me.

New Revver Site
Change is the challenge. I am poking around on the new Revver site and although I am confident it will be an improvement once I have learnt how to use it, when I need to upload a video or do something I go back to the classic version, because it is familiar and I know where I stand with it. I am pleased they have retained the classic version because it made me a lot less frantic in the transition.
I certainly don't understand the implications of this but it is going to provide a lot more possibilities once I understand how to use it. I look forward to learning. For now it has meant my revver income has slowed down to a crawl, so that will motivate me to learn I imagine. It was just building gradual momentum that had began to excite me.

Magnify - sunday drive
Magnify is a site that allows you to have collections of videos and manage your own channel. Others can review and comment on the videos, but I haven't seen a lot of commenting or reviewing. It is still in beta though, so early days.
Revver vs Metacafe
Revver has made some changes already. It's looking good. I am really happy with Revver and have decided that Metacafe is not for me. I love the simplicity and clarity of Revver. Although Metacafe emailed me which possibly massaged my ego a little, I gave it a go and don't think it is for me. I notice some other Revver users are having good successes. To be fair, if you are interested you should read this article by Nalts. His site Will Video for Food, is a good source of information and he makes it his business to inform. I'm just playing.

Metacafe
Road Trip #1 - video powered by Metacafe
As I have said before I love revver, but I am having a little trial of Metacafe also. They have different features so it will be interesting to 'play with some new toys'. I don't know if Metacafe have the audience that I want. I have been thinking a bit about the whole viral video thing and whilst I want an audience, I don't want my video's to be performances. I want them to be authentic and real views of the world. Anyway, we'll see....
